Why you should be extra careful voting for California's next US senator
Voter information guides are now being mailed by the secretary of state across California ahead of the June 7 primary election.
When you get yours, one thing you’ll notice is a very long list of candidates running for California’s open U.S. Senate seat.
The guide features dozens of candidates. The official ballot will list all 34 candidate names over two pages. Election officials are warning voters to be careful — choose only one candidate for the U.S. Senate seat, otherwise your vote for that race will not count.
The top two U.S. Senate race primary finishers, regardless of their political party, will move on to November. KPCC and its partner stations will sponsor a debate on May 10 featuring the major Senate candidates that will be live-streamed.
The last day to register to vote or change your party preference is May 23, and you can do so online.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles County has already begun mailing sample ballots and will continue doing so on a rolling basis until May 28.

Mailing of vote-by-mail ballots will begin on May 9 and continue through June 3, according to Mike Sanchez, media and communications assistant for the county registrar's office.
