Upland mayor resigns amid criminal probe
The Upland City Council has a big decision on its hands - how to pick the city’s new mayor. The former mayor abruptly resigned Tuesday amid a federal corruption probe. It's just the latest turmoil in Upland City Hall.
John Pomierski has stepped down as the FBI looks into allegations of bribery, extortion and money laundering. Federal agents seized documents from Upland City Hall and Pomierski’s home last year.
He’s not been charged with a crime. But two Upland businessmen pleaded guilty two weeks ago to bribery charges involving an unnamed public official.
Last month, Upland city manager Robb Quincy was placed on paid leave for unspecified reasons. The action came shortly after the city settled a lawsuit brought by an Upland policeman.
The officer claimed he’d been passed over for a promotion after investigating an incident involving Quincy. The case has apparently become part of the ongoing FBI probe.
John Pomierski’s mayoral term was set to end next year. Upland’s mayor pro teem will fill the vacancy until the City Council decides whether to call a special election or appoint a new mayor.
