Target to open store in downtown LA
Cost-conscious shoppers with a sense of style will have some new retail destinations in downtown Los Angeles, including Target/. The discount superstore is part of plans to renovate a shopping center at Seventh and Figueroa streets.
The mall’s owner, Brookfield Properties, started terminating leases about a year ago in anticipation of the deal, and a multimillion dollar facelift. The mall at 7th and Fig is nearly 25 years old.
Downtown booster Hal Bastian says getting Target to sign a lease has been a long process. “Started probably over two years ago,” said Bastian.
Bastian is with the Downtown Center Business Improvement District. His vision is to help shape the gentrified city center. He says this Target will cater to commuters and loft dwellers, so it’ll probably be very different than its namesake stores in suburban neighborhoods.
“I don’t expect you’ll be buying a propane gas BBQ there, or lawn furniture, or outdoor dining sets, or things to wash your car," said Bastian.
Bastian says it will stock lots of housewares and groceries, and will generate about 250 new jobs. Target rented 100,000 square feet. That’s one of the largest downtown retail leases in decades.
The new store’s doors will open in a couple of years.
