Santa Monica police: Gunman kills self after 12-hour standoff
Santa Monica police say a gunman has killed himself in a home after a nearly 12-hour standoff.
Lt. Robert Almada says SWAT team members fired tear gas and entered the home at around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, where they found the man dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Nobody else was hurt.
Police say the 47-year-old man had quarreled with his estranged wife before he took his 15-year-old son and 86-year-old mother-in-law hostage on Tuesday. His wife wasn't home at the time.
The boy escaped and called police.
Officers surrounded the home in the 2900 block of Delaware Avenue at around 5 p.m., evacuated about a square block and tried to convince the man to surrender.
The man's mother-in-law left the home some five hours later.
