Safe and sane fireworks go on sale today
In the municipalities that allow them, state-approved fireworks go on sale beginning today.
In California, the state fire marshal’s office determines which fireworks are legal. The so-called “safe and sane” varieties carry an official state fire marshal seal. Everything else is classified dangerous and illegal. Fire Marshal Tonya Hoover says law enforcement agencies confiscate an average of about 40,000 pounds of illegal fireworks every year.
"It doesn’t matter if you’re small or large, we take it very seriously. Local government will prosecute. We will collect those fireworks and we will collect the vehicles that those fireworks are in."
Charges range from misdemeanors to felonies. For folks who use the "safe and sane" varieties this 4th of July, Hoover says her agency offers several safety tips on its website, and a warning for parents.
"Parents can be held liable for any damages or injuries caused by the fireworks if their child is using them."
The state allows the sale of fireworks from today through next Tuesday.
