Sacramento Is Reducing Black Child Deaths. Here's What LA Can Learn.
Los Angeles County public health officials are focused on lowering the high rates of death for black babies. Black babies here are three times more likely to die than white babies in their first year of life.
Sacramento County's initiative, the Black Child Legacy Campaign, was launched in 2015 with a goal of reducing preventable deaths of African American children by 10 to 20 percent by 2020. The results are surpassing expectations and leaders there say there are lessons for other communities, including L.A.
