Power restored for customers in South Bay

A power outage in the South Bay left around 100,000 customers in the dark Sunday morning. Communities affected include Torrance, Ranchos Palos Verdes, South Redondo Beach, Lomita, Rolling Hills, Gardena, and Palos Verdes Estates. SoCal Edison officials raced to restore power to those without it, completing work by 1:45 p.m.

Update 1:45 p.m.: Power back for nearly all customers

Power has been restored to all but 11 customers in the South Bay, Southern California Edison reports.

Update 1:08 p.m.: Lomita, Torrance customers await power

Power lines appear to be coming back quickly to South Bay residents. SoCal Edison now reports Redondo Beach, South Redondo, Palos Verdes, Rancho Palos Verdes and Rolling Hills have their power restored. 

The agency tweeted that about 18,500 customers in Torrance and 15,000 in Lomita are still awaiting power.

Update 12:50 p.m.: Power restored to 30k customers

SoCal Edison says about 30k of its customers have had their power restored after this morning's outage, although many more are still waiting. 

City News Service reports that a number of the agency's trucks have blocked 190th Street near Crenshaw Boulevard, the site where power lines were downed Sunday morning.

Update 10:15 a.m.: Over 100k affected by outage

SoCal Edison representatives revised their estimate of the number of customers affected by Sunday's outage. 

Edison spokesman David Song said over 100,000 customers have been impacted, including residents in Rolling Hills, Gardena, and Palos Verdes Estates.

"We have a half dozen troublemen — which our our first responders — quickly and safely restore service to customers," Song said. "Right now they're slowly rolling on circuits back on in service, so people are getting their power back."

Meanwhile, customers are reporting restored power in areas including Torrance, Redondo Beach and Lomita. 

SoCal Edison is advising drivers to be cautious around traffic lights in the area, and to treat intersections with nonfunctional traffic lights as four-way stops. Song also advised that customers keep their refrigerators closed to seal in cold air and avoid spoiling food.

"Definitely we hope to get power restored soon," he said. "Before the day gets warmer and people turn on their ACs and crank their ACs."

Update 9:30 a.m.: SoCal Edison power outage hits customers in South Bay

Southern California Edison says the power is out for about 69,000 customers in the South Bay. Communities affected include Torrance, Ranchos Palos Verdes, South Redondo Beach and Lomita.

The power went out at 7:06 a.m. Sunday morning after a powerline went down at the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and 190th Street, an Edison spokesperson said. City News Service also reports a number of Gardena traffic lights were currently out.

SoCal Edison crews are working to restore service. They don't yet have an estimate for when power will be fully restored, but you can see a list of current outages on their website.
