Los Angeles police shot and killed a suspected assailant Sunday as he or she was attacking another person near MacArthur Park, officials said.

The shooting was reported at 1:05 p.m. near Union Avenue and Sixth Street, said Officer Gregory Baek of the Los Angeles Police Department.

"The officers were on their way to a totally separate call when they witnessed the suspect attacking a citizen with a knife,'' Baek said. "This is when the officer-involved shooting occurred.''

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

At least one gunshot was audible on a Los Angeles Fire Department radio frequency, as a firefighter was radioing in that his truck had arrived at some sort of incident. "Oh, wow, shots fired, we have an officer-involved shooting right behind the truck,'' said the firefighter.

A minute later, the same firefighter calmly reported that one person was dead and no police or firefighters were injured.
