Police shoot, kill 22 year-old man in Anaheim's Sage Park
A 22-year old man was shot and killed by police at a park in Anaheim early Tuesday.
The shooting occurred shortly after midnight at Sage Park and the 1300 block of Lido, according to a spokesperson for the Anaheim Police Department.
Officers initially responded to a complaint from a resident about a man who had been knocking on his door and ringing the bell, Sgt. Daron Wyatt told KPCC.
The resident told police that when he opened the door, he didn't recognize the man from the area and told him to leave, but the man came back a short time later and continued knocking and ringing the door bell.
Officers originally cleared the call after radioing back that they were unable to locate the suspect, but two officers in two different vehicles continued to search.
One of the officers headed to Sage Park, and about three minutes later broadcast that he'd been in an officer-involved shooting, Wyatt said.
The officer said over the radio that he thought it was the same person who had been knocking on doors.
The suspect was transported to a hospital but died from his injuries. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family. Police did say he was a resident of Anaheim.
Wyatt said his understanding was that no weapon had been recovered but that the scene was still being processed.
The officer was wearing a body camera, and the video will be given to the Orange County District Attorney's office for review, Wyatt told the Los Angeles Times.
Per standard protocol, the officer would go on a minimum of three days paid administrative leave and report to a department psychologist before returning to duty.
