An 18-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle in Canoga Park as he attempted to flee from a robber on a bicycle, and police today were asking for the public's help in finding the thief.

The teenager was identified by police Saturday as Miguel Alvarenga, a San Fernando Valley resident. He was on Sherman Way near Mason Avenue at about 8 p.m. Thursday when a person on a bicycle tried to rob him, Officer April Harding of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section said.

Alvarenga ran, but was struck by a passing car, Harding said.

The male suspect fled on a bicycle in an unknown direction and remained at large, she said.

Police went to found Alvarenga unconscious in the roadway, she said. He was pronounced dead at a hospital the next day.

Police are encouraging anyone with information to call Topanga Area homicide detectives at (818) 756-3363 or, during non-business hours or weekends, 1-877-LAPD-24-7.
