The Intimate Opera of Pasadena to debut at Pasadena Playhouse
Starting in December, the Intimate Opera of Pasadena will inaugurate its new home at the Pasadena Playhouse. It’ll begin with a holiday production of Giancarlo Menotti’s “Amahl and the Night Visitors.”
The company, founded 14 years ago, used to perform once a month at a bookstore and coffee shop in Old Pasadena. The opera’s general director says the time has come for Pasadena to claim an official opera company in residence. Intimate Opera of Pasadena offers young singers opportunities to learn from and perform with more seasoned artists.
The Pasadena Playhouse is a relatively small venue, but its artistic staff is interested in productions that pare down the usual grand dimensions of opera to reveal the human stories behind the score. The Playhouse has become at least a temporary home to several small performing arts companies as it tries to rebound from the financial doldrums.
For several months earlier this year, the historic house went dark as its board raised money. A $1 million matching grant helped raise the Pasadena Playhouse curtain again.
The Pasadena Playhouse is hosting a fundraiser for the Intimate Opera tonight at 6. Company members will perform an abridged production of Donizetti’s “The Elixir of Love.”
