Parking charge at Griffith Park to kick in by holiday season
Griffith Park will soon be charging for parking at its famed observatory and along the main roads through the park.
It’s part of a comprehensive plan aimed at bringing a little more serenity to the park by cutting back on the heavy traffic that have at times overwhelmed it.
The parking will cost $4 per hour. All revenues will go toward increasing shuttle service through the park that will take effect later next year.
The park has already increased existing DASH shuttle service from weekends to weekdays; the shuttle runs every 20 minutes from the Red Line subway station on Vermont Avenue.
One place shuttles won't be going is a lookout spot to view the Hollywood sign. That plan was scrapped when hikers and bikers complained about opening up a car-free zone to the vehicles.
No word yet on the exact date the paid parking will go into effect, but officials said they hope to have the parking charges in place by the busy holiday season.
