Orange County's 91 Freeway to undergo $73M expansion

Transportation officials kicked off a nearly $73 million project Monday in Anaheim that will add a new lane in each direction of a six-mile stretch of eastern Orange County's 91 Freeway.

Will Kempton of the Orange County Transportation Authority says widening the 91 between the 55 and the 241 will speed up the freeway’s standstill rush hour.

"A lane moves about 1,800 vehicles an hour," says Kempton. "And so if you provide that kind of capacity, you are really taking a lot of pressure off of the existing roadway."

About 300,000 drivers use the stretch of road each day. It's the only freeway corridor connecting Orange and Riverside counties.

This is the second in a series of widening projects along the 91 Freeway in Orange County. Riverside County is also moving forward with a plan to widen its portion of the 91 Freeway and expand the 91 Express Lanes from the Orange County line to Interstate 15.
