San Bernardino's 215 Freeway shutdown to cause weekend delays
Consider yourself warned: Officials are telling motorists to avoid the 215 Freeway through San Bernardino this weekend.
Caltrans is closing northbound lanes starting Friday for a weekend of work as part of the final phase of a six-year freeway overhaul. Lanes will reopen Monday morning.
Crews will move northbound lanes of the 215 slightly east so that they connect with the new 259 Freeway. The 259 will allow drivers coming from the Inland Empire to hook up with the 210, and Inland-bound drivers to connect with the 215-South.
The weekend closure of the 215-North through San Bernardino will allow Caltrans crews to finish re-stripping and paving lanes, says Ray Wolfe, executive director of the San Bernardino Associated Governments.

“I can’t emphasize enough," he warns, "if you have other options when you travel this weekend through this part of town, your best move would be to go another way."
Crews will also complete a pair of off-ramps and install a new sound barrier. Wolfe says the goal is to re-open lanes by 6 a.m. Monday "if not sooner."
"But more importantly," he adds, "we want to continue to provide a safe freeway system while we advance our way towards final construction completion of this project."
The 215 overhaul will eventually expand the number of lanes in each direction from three to five. The 6-year, $700 million project should be completed by next summer.
