Officials Unveil 'Heli-Tanker' That Can Fight Wildfires At Night
The specially equipped helicopter holds 1,000 gallons of water and can refill from any source, like a river, a lake, or even a backyard pool.
As wildfire season approaches, fire officials are looking for faster and safer ways to fight the blazes. Nighttime aerial firefighting is one solution, but it hasn't always been practical. Orange County fire officials have rolled out specially equipped helicopters that can operate around the clock.
Firefighters on the ground will get air support from a 'heli-tanker' that can hold 1,000 gallons of water and refill from any source, like a river, a lake, or even a backyard pool. A second helicopter equipped with night vision goggles and thermal imaging cameras will direct the tanker.
