Irvine dedicates memorial to military killed in Afghanistan, Iraq
The City of Irvine closed out the Veterans Day weekend by dedicating a memorial to fallen American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
A series of black, rectangular panels with wooden frames, each about six feet tall, are clustered in a corner of Northwood Community Park in Irvine. It’s called the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial.
Each kiosk is filled with the names and ages, printed in white, of every American soldier who’s died so far in Iraq and Afghanistan.
That’s more than 5,700 service members so far.
Irvine officials say this is one of the first permanent memorials in the country to honor those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
