New BP video shows oil still leaking
New video unveiled at a Capitol Hill hearing this afternoon shows oil is still spewing into the Gulf of Mexico. The chair of the Senate Environment Committee accuses BP of lying on its original permit application.
Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer called the hearing to update Congress on the federal response to the Gulf oil spill. The highlight was new video from BP that showed oil still spewing into the Gulf even after an insertion tube was installed.
She narrated the video: "See it? Look. There’s the oil, after the insertion tube. And at the bottom it looks like a little flame, that’s the dispersants at work down there. So I just felt it was important for us to note that this interim step, if you look at the other picture of before they put it in, you can’t really tell the difference that much."
Boxer read statements from BP’s permit request saying “proven equipment and technology” would control and stop the impact of a spill. She then read a second BP statement issued after the spill that said the “proven” technology had never been tested.
Boxer said she wants the Department of Justice to investigate.
