5,000-gallon sewage spill closes mile of beach near Ballona Creek
A nearly 5,000-gallon sewage spill shut down a one-mile stretch of beach near Ballona Creek.
The shutdown is in effect until at least Thursday afternoon, according to a press release issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
“Our first priority is to protect the health and safety of the people who visit the beach," Jonathan Fielding, director of the public health department, said in a statement. "Once we determine bacteria levels in the water have returned to normal, we will remove the beach advisory.”
Water samples have been taken of the ocean water a quarter mile north and south of Ballona Creek, and the water's bacteria level is being tested to determine when the beach will open again.
Meanwhile, warning signs have been posted along the beach advising visitors, swimmers and surfers to avoid the water.
Public Health was notified of the spill by the Inglewood Department of Public Works, who is also organizing clean-up efforts.
