Judge rules Jamie McCourt is co-owner of Dodgers
A judge has ruled that a postnuptial marital agreement giving sole ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers to Frank McCourt is not valid.
Jamie and Frank McCourt are co-owners of the Dodgers, according to this morning's Superior Court decision in the Dodger divorce case.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Scott Gordon decided to throw out the McCourts’ 2004 marital property agreement, ruling it’s not “valid and enforceable.” There are two versions of that agreement – one that put the Dodgers in Frank McCourt’s hands and another that says the team belongs to both McCourts. Frank’s attorneys argued the second version was in error – but Judge Gordon instead tossed out both.
Under California's community property laws, the judge’s decision means the ballclub is now owned by Frank and Jamie.
The ruling probably won’t have an immediate impact on the day-to-day operations of the team, and it’s likely not the end of the fight. The former powerhouse couple may go back to mediation talks, or Frank McCourt could continue seeking sole ownership through legal channels – something he’s already indicated he'll do.
