Mayor Eric Garcetti's bridge housing project opens doors to its first residents
The facility near Olvera Street gets people off the sidewalks and on track to find permanent homes. But on day one the beds filled up quickly, and there were still dozens sleeping in tents nearby.
John Maceri, CEO of The People Concern, the nonprofit operating the site, said they expect residents to live there six months max. Enough time, Maceri says, to get an ID, an income, a rental subsidy, and a landlord willing to take that subsidy. But he says they won’t evict residents who take longer.
