LAPD sets up checkpoints to snag drunken drivers
The Los Angeles Police Department says it will be operating sobriety checkpoints across the city through Labor Day. The two-week, end-of-summer campaign is part of a national effort to crack down on alcohol-related fatalities.
Southland law enforcement agencies began conducting DUI stops August 19 with the intention of stemming drunk driving accidents. Checkpoints will operate when inebriated drivers are most likely to take the wheel - at night and on weekends.
Police say they won’t just throw violators behind bars. They can and will confiscate drivers’ licenses - or force lawbreakers to use ignition interlocks.
Law enforcement officials plan checkpoints this weekend at several locations including Figueroa and 9th streets in central L.A. - Manchester and Broadway in the Southeast area, and Sunset Boulevard and Hoover Street in the northeast part of town. By the time it’s over, officials will have conducted nearly 20 DUI stops throughout the city.
More than 10,000 people have died in alcohol-related car crashes across the country in recent years.
