LA firefighter funeral being held this morning
The Los Angeles City Fire Department sponsored a candlelight vigil Thursday night for Glenn Allen, who died last week while fighting a fire. His funeral takes place this morning, starting at 8:30 a.m.
The funeral’s expected to draw hundreds of firefighters from throughout Southern California, along with relatives and friends of Glenn Allen. L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and other elected officials also plan to attend the funeral at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in downtown L.A. The city will close numerous streets for the funeral and for a procession from City Hall to the Cathedral that precedes it.
Allen died when a ceiling collapsed on him and five other firefighters battling a fire inside a 12,000-square-foot home in the Hollywood Hills last week. Police have declared the home a crime scene as the city investigates whether it met fire codes. It had recently been remodeled.
Allen was 61 years old and nearing retirement from the fire department. The day after he died, his daughter gave birth to his first grandchild.
