How Fallen Vietnam Sailor Raul Guerra Returned Home After 52 Years

Over half a century ago, a young sailor from Montebello, CA died in a plane crash in a remote, mountainous area of Vietnam.

For decades, the U.S government couldn't recover Raul Guerra's remains. But his best friend Ruben Valencia never stopped trying to bring him home.

In April, Guerra was finally laid to rest in Southern California. KPCC's Libby Denkmann has the story.

This story first aired on the radio on 89. 3 KPCC. Click on the blue media player at the top of your screen to listen. You can read the full piece over on LAist.com.

Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
