Googie World Expo highlights LA's space-age architecture
Fans of mid-century architecture are in for a real treat this Sunday.
It's a free expo in Sherman Oaks dedicated to a style known as Googie.
Googie buildings often featured upswept roofs, dramatic curves, geometric shapes, and plenty of glass, steel and neon.
Alex Cohen recently spoke with Los Angeles Magazine editor and Googie afficionado Chris Nichols about its distinct style.
"Man, we owned it here," Nichols said. "Los Angeles gave birth to it, Los Angeles nurtured it, and it really became a symbol of the city. When you see these buildings, you're like, 'oh, that's gotta be a Los Angeles building.'"
The Googie World Expo includes a photography exhibition, a line-up of speakers, book signings and more. More details about the event can be found on the expo website. Admission is free.
