Free weekend? 'Back to the Future' art, $2 brunch and Festival of Colors

Angelenos, our sunny SoCal weather is back. Close those laptops and turn off the tablets because there’s plenty to do IRL. How about throwback art, cheap brunch and a kite festival at the beach? Sounds like a fantastic weekend to us. 

Here's everything you need to know: 


1. Back to the Future: A 2015 Art Tribute

Meltdown Comics and Nerdist Showroom present "Back to the Future: A 2015 Art Tribute." That's right, people — an entire art exhibit dedicated to the 1980s sci-fi classic. You can expect themed decor, an open bar, and even a DeLorean time machine photo booth. Eighty-eight artists will show their work. 

When: 7 p.m. to midnight Friday

2. 2 buck brunch

Tony's Darts Away is launching a new craft beer and brunch menu. The best part? It's offering the dishes for two bucks this weekend. The menu includes tasty classics like chilaquiles, mediterranean hash, a traditional diner breakfast, breakfast burritos and rolled oats. Everything is available vegan or not. Tony's will also be debuting a kids menu — so bring the whole fam!

3. Los Angeles Holi Festival of Colors 

Festival of Colors

Brighten up your weekend at the Festival of Colors. Every year, the event brings the traditional Indian custom of Holi, a Hindu spring festival in honor of Krishna, to L.A. Douse yourself and others with powerful bags of color as a way to welcome spring. There will also be Vinyasa, Hatha and CorePower yoga sessions, Bhangra (group Punjabi folk dancing), and live musical performances.

4. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium: Grunion season begins

Spend your Saturday night with some fishy friends. The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is hosting an event that will allow you to take a special look at grunions, small, slender Californian fish that swarm onto beaches at night to spawn. The aquarium will open at 8 p.m. and an auditorium program begins at 9 p.m., which will be followed by a guided observation at the beach. You'll learn about the interesting mating rituals and growth of this curious fish.

5. Basic cicycling skills training

Join this 2-hour workshop that'll provide you with the basic knowledge you need to safely ride your bike the streets of L.A. County. Topics will include: Proper helmet fit, how to check your bicycle, rules of the road, riding visibly and predictably and traffic principles for bicyclists. You'll leave with a handy booklet and priceless information. Think you know everything? This quiz will tell you what you don't know about Calif. bike laws.

6. Derby fundraiser 

Wanna support some tough chicks? Eat More Art Out Productions is hosing its annual silent auction fundraiser for Angel City Derby Girls. More than 100 artists will contribute, including Dave Pressler, Jim Mahfood, Mike Huddleston, Dave Crosland, Yelley and many others, LAist reports. You can expect a night of live art, music, food trucks, a bar and silent auction. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Los Angeles' Angel City Derby Girls, a flat track roller derby league. 

When: 7 p.m. Saturday

7. Redondo Pier’s Annual Kite Festival

Make it a Sunday Funday and relax on the beach with kites flying overhead. The Redondo Pier Association will be hosting its 41st Annual Festival of the Kite. Prizes will be awarded for the best hand-made kite, best ground display, highest-flying kite and the youngest flyers. You can also help launch a massive 25x4' kite in the sky. And that's not all in the nostalgic fun category: Get excited for the 12th Annual Redondo Throw Down Yo-Yo competition. Yes, this exists! 

When: 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday

8. Weekend splurge: The Essentials

Get ready for a food coma after LA Weekly's signature food and wine extravaganza. Curated by LA Weekly food writers, the event will showcase signature bites from restaurants featured in LA Weekly's 99 Essential restaurant issue that is also coming out the same week. In addition to food samples, there will also be wine from top shelf wineries and cocktail samples.

When: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday

Where: California Market Center | MAP

Price: General admission: $65 through March 7; At the door: $70 (There are also VIP tickets available that have a one hour early entry into the event.)


9. Another weekend splurge: PaleyFest

"The Good Wife," "Girls," "Scandal," "Glee," "Key and Peele," "Homeland," "American Horror Story." Watch any of these shows? Then you may want to check out the PaleyFest in L.A. this weekend. You'll watch episodes or highlights of the featured work, followed by panel discussions and a Q&A with actors like Keegan-Michael Key, Julianna Margulies, Lena Dunham and Kathy Bates. Tickets sold individually for each show.
