Foul ball at Dodger game strikes 3-year-old child
A foul ball struck a 3-year-old girl in the head at a Monday night Dodger game during batting practice, a team spokesperson confirmed Tuesday.
Catcher Russell Martin drove the ball into the third base stands where the child had been watching the game at the Los Angeles stadium.
“As soon as it hit, I heard the sound, I knew it wasn’t a good thing,” Martin said in an interview with MLB.com. "And then I saw him grab her; it didn't look like she was moving, so that was scary.''
The girl lost consciousness and was swept away by emergency vehicles to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, according to MLB.com. The web site reported that the ball fractured the child’s skull.
Dodger team spokesman, Joe Jareck said that the girl has been scheduled for surgery Tuesday morning and her “long-term prognosis is good.”
Martin told Jareck that he wants to pay for all of the medical bills if necessary. Martin was very shaken when he heard about the child’s condition, Jareck said.
"Every baseball player out there has hit a ball into the stands, but that doesn't make Russell feel any better,'' Jareck said.
