Fiorina hospitalized with infection related to breast cancer surgery [Updated]
U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina entered a hospital today, and it's unclear when she'll be able to resume campaigning. A statement from her campaign says the Republican challenger to U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer has an infection from surgery she underwent this summer.
As Fiorina prepared to run for Senate last year, doctors diagnosed her with breast cancer. She completed chemotherapy and radiation treatments and this summer had reconstructive surgery after a double mastectomy.
A campaign statement says she is "cancer free," but she has an infection related to that surgery. It said she was admitted to the hospital to receive antibiotics.
The 56-year-old former head of Hewlett-Packard canceled two campaign events in Riverside and Coachella. The statement said "Carly is upbeat and her doctors expect her to make a quick and full recovery."
A spokeswoman for Barbara Boxer issued a statement saying "We wish Carly Fiorina a speedy recovery." Fiorina went to the hospital one week before the election. She trails Boxer – a three-term incumbent – in surveys of likely voters.
U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), also issued a statement regarding Fiorina’s unexpected hospitalization, wishing her a "full and speedy recovery."
“It was apparent during her triumphant battle against breast cancer that Carly is a fighter, and I have no doubt that she will be back on the campaign trail very soon; in the interim I hope Californians will join me and Sandy in keeping Carly in our thoughts and prayers.”
