A fatal collision involving multiple vehicles, including one carrying former Olympian and television personality Bruce Jenner, forced the closure the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu Saturday afternoon, sheriff's officials said.

One person was killed in the collision near PCH and Corral Canyon Road that sheriff's deputies responded to at about 12:15 p.m., according to Deputy Steve Difonzo of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station.

Sheriff's Lt. Jennifer Seetoo said that Jenner was involved in the collision but could not provide any additional information.  Alan Nierob, Jenner's publicist, said that Jenner was unhurt.

Sheriff's Sgt. Philip Brooks told NBC4 that a preliminary investigation determined that an SUV driven by Jenner appears to have started the three-car collision when it hit a white Lexus from behind.

Jenner was driving an SUV carrying a dune buggy on the northbound side of PCH that rear-ended a Lexus sedan, Brooks said, noting that traffic was not moving very quickly. One of the drivers may have stopped short.

The Lexus was sandwiched between Jenner's SUV and a Toyota Prius, Brooks said.

The Lexus then spun or veered into the quickly moving southbound lane of PCH, where it was hit head-on by a Hummer, he said. The driver of the Lexus died.

Brooks told NBC4 that it appears that Jenner was not being chased by paparazzi at the time of the crash, contrary to other media reports.

A rescue helicopter landed at Pepperdine University, 2 miles east of the crash, to pick up one victim. It isn't clear if that was the person who has been declared dead.

Reporter Richard Winton of the Los Angeles Times tweeted that the PCH is expected to remain closed until at least 7 p.m.
