The leading Democratic candidate for governor of California still hasn’t formally announced that he’s running. That hasn’t stopped the association that represents Democratic governors nationwide from launching an attack on the prominent Republicans in the race.

Former eBay boss Meg Whitman and state insurance commissioner Steve Poizner are the leading candidates in the GOP gubernatorial primary.

The Democratic Governors Association has launched a Web site that targets both Republicans. The Web site’s reported purpose is to fact-check statements from Whitman and Poizner.

The association won’t say how much it’s spending on the California race, but it spent $3 million on a similar effort in Virginia. The Democrat lost in that race.

Unions and some wealthy donors have formed two other groups to raise money for California’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate. That’s likely to be former Governor Jerry Brown, if and when he formally announces he’s running for his old job.
