Cut&Paste design competition comes to LA
A live digital design competition travels to Southern California this weekend. Cut&Paste gives local designers a chance to get out of their studios and into the spotlight before a live audience at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood.
John Fiorelli, the founder of Cut&Paste, says the idea for the contest came to him five years ago in the Big Apple.
"In New York we love live creative competition," he says, "whether that's DJing or B-boying or MC battles."
He says there hadn't been anything like a design battle at the time and it seemed like a fun thing to do. "And the technology supported it," he explains, "projectors and computers can be connected in such a way that you can watch what a designer does live and that's exciting."
The competition is held in cities all over the world and contestants can enter in the 2D, 3D and motion design categories. During the live event the clock is ticking, the crowd is charged and vocal, the pressure is intense.
As designers cut and paste onstage, their work is outputted on large screens for all to see and streamed live to the world online.
On October 2, the 2010 Digital Design Tournament began with a launch in New York City at Webster Hall. The U.S. Tour will be followed by events in London and Berlin. Immediately afterwards, Cut&Paste will make its debut in Latin America with stops in Mexico City and Sao Paulo, before traveling to Asian destinations in Bangkok, Seoul and Tokyo.
At every tour stop a grand prize winner will be selected in each category to compete in Cut&Paste's most impressive stage, the Global Championship in February 2011.
Founder John Fiorelli says the designers feed off the energy of the live audience. "We've had designers who will openly communicate with the audience to see what the audience wants," he says. "Some of our savvier designers choose to make a performance out of it."
A total of 30 expenses-paid winners will journey to New York City where the locally crowned champions will battle for top honors against the best the design world has to offer. One honor includes an opportunity to create a special short motion video for Converse awarded to the top motion designer.
The Cut&Paste L.A. competition will take place on Saturday, October 9 at 7:30 p.m. at The Music Box at The Henry Fonda Theater, 6126 Hollywood Blvd.
