CSU summer arts school heads into its 30th year

California State University's summer arts school for college students and working professionals will mark its 30th year this summer. The immersive two-week program is currently accepting applications.
"We're providing a really intensive educational experience that people aren't going to get anywhere else," said Joanne Sharp, assistant director of CSU Summer Arts.

Graduating high school seniors and those older can apply. The program typically gets about 500 applications for 400 spots. About 65 percent of attendees are current Cal State students, according to Sharp.
Most classes will be run out of Cal State University Monterey Bay and participants will receive three units of credit. There are also two classes being held abroad.
"It's a semester's worth of work in two weeks," Sharp said.
Guest teachers this year include jazz drummer Billy Drummond and former California Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera, among others.

Tuition prices start at about $1,600 for California resident undergraduates. Dance, music, acting, writing and fine art classes are among the offerings. Nearly 80 percent of students receive scholarship assistance.
To celebrate the 30th year, an alumni event will be held July 30 for former faculty and students. Summer school sessions run between June 29 and August 17. Guest teaching artists will also put on regular public events throughout the summer.
