'Captain EO' returns to Disneyland Tuesday
A fantasia from the 1980s, "Captain EO," is returning to Disneyland as an homage to its late star. Michael Jackson’s special effects-laden starring role hits the Magic Kingdom’s screen again on Tuesday.
The 17-minute musical movie debuted almost a quarter century ago during the height of Jackson’s superstardom at Disneyland's Tomorrowland theater. That's the site of its return engagement.
On its Web site, Disney says it’ll screen a new 70-millimeter print of the film, and recent enhancements to the acoustics in the theater will improve the sound. But Disneyland admitted that it couldn’t replicate some of the original film’s special effects.
Michael Jackson died last summer of a drug overdose. In “Captain EO,” he leads a ragtag group of aliens on a quest through space. The film features his classic “Another Part of Me.”
The King of Pop wasn’t the only star attached to the film. Angelica Houston played the “Witch Queen.” George Lucas was the executive producer, and Francis Ford Coppola directed.
