“Inglorious Basterds” is turning into a victory for director Quentin Tarantino. KPCC’s Shirley Jahad has more.

The film is a tale of Jewish U.S. Army soldiers taking revenge against Nazis in World War II. They create a commando unit out to scalp Nazis, and they plot a big attack to take place at a movie premier. Tarantino describes it as a spaghetti western war flick.

Inglorious Basterds stars Brad Pitt and opened this weekend at the top of the box office. The Weinstein Company release drew $37.6 million. It’s also the biggest opening weekend of any movie Quentin Tarantino has directed.

District 9 came in second its second weekend bringing nearly $19 million. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is third with 12-and-a-half million.

Overall ticket sales this weekend put the studios on track to just break last summer’s revenue record of $4.2 billion.
