Beverly Hills votes to support Purple line subway extension, but not under high school
By a 3-2 vote, the Beverly Hills City Council has passed a resolution that favors Metro's Purple Line extension - but with the condition that the subway steers clear of Beverly Hills High School.
Many in Beverly Hills worry that tunneling under the high school campus is dangerous—a view that Metro engineers dispute.
Newly-elected Beverly Hills Mayor John Mirisch says the Thursday vote makes the city’s position clear.
“Our hope is that Metro will take our concerns seriously," Mirisch emphasized. "That we can sit down with them and reach some sort of resolution which will allow them to move forward with the Westside subway extension - the Purple Line - but avoid tunneling under our high school.”
Metro broke ground on the first phase of 9.4 mile transit project late in November. Several months before that, the Beverly Hills Unified School District and the city filed lawsuits to block the route.
