Armenian Church leader visits Los Angeles
The spiritual leader of Armenian Christians around the world is in Los Angeles this weekend for an historic event.
His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch of the Armenian Church, was in Southern California to consecrate a new Cathedral. Hundreds of people turned out at the Cathedral on Glenoaks Blvd in Burbank Saturday for the opening ceremony.
The newly built Cathedral is made of a pink stone brought in from Armenia. It will serve the Western Diocese and is the Mother Cathedral for all the Armenians in the western United States.
Sunday, His Holiness Karekin II delivers the first Holy Mass or Sourp Badarak at the Cathedral. The public is welcome. About 700 people can sit in the building. Outside about 700 more can watch on video from the plaza.
People in the Armenian community have been planning and raising money for ten years to build the church. It has been under construction for the past three years.
