AARP, Ad Council launch outreach effort to Latino caregivers

AARP and the Ad Council are launching a new set of public service announcements to connect caregivers with resources and support, particularly those in the Latino community.

More than one in three Latino families has a caregiver, according to research by the National Alliance for Caregiving and Evercare, an insurance company.  By and large, taking care of an older parent or relative is considered a normal and expected part of life in Latino families, says Amy Goyer, AARP's Family and Caregiving expert.

"Latino caregivers are less likely to reach out for help because of this sense of responsibility and duty," says Goyer. Typically a Latino caregiver's attitude is, "'I should be doing this for my loved ones,' but, sometimes you need some help," she adds.

That’s why AARP and the Ad Council are rolling out a series of radio and TV spots that reach out to Latino caregivers. The PSAs include links to websites in English and Spanish that provide caregiving resources. The sites also provide caregivers an opportunity to connect with experts and with one another.

There are some 42 million caregivers in the U.S., according to AARP's research.
