NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Beach police arrested eight people and issued 20 citations at a sobriety checkpoint, a sergeant said today.

The checkpoint on northbound Newport Boulevard at Finley Street ran from 8 p.m. Saturday to 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Newport Beach police Sgt. Chuck Freeman said.

"During the DUI checkpoint our officers arrested eight people, six for driving under the influence, one for an outstanding warrant and one for public drunkenness,'' said Freeman, adding that officers also issued 20 traffic citations for various violations.'

Police said they chose the spot because of its proximity to bars and restaurants and its high visibility.

Drivers passing through the checkpoint were also given a brochure on "Driving under the influence," prepared by the Newport Beach Police Department Traffic Division.
