4.5 earthquake hits near Banning, California

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck 4 miles northwest of Banning, California Wednesday morning, the USGS reported. It was originally reported as a 4.8 magnitude quake but was downgraded shortly after.

"I was sound asleep and there was just a huge jolt that woke me right up and it shook for ... probably five or six [seconds]," Banning mobile home resident Dawn Kehret told KPCC.

USGS seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones told KPCC that the size of the quake, which struck at 6:42 a.m., is not significant.

"Four-point-five is the size that occurs somewhere in the state every month or so, so it's really not that big an earthquake," said Dr. Jones. "If you got any damage from this you haven’t been building for Southern California."

Seismologists will never know what fault on which the quake occurred due to its small size, said Jones, but they can say it's related to the San Andreas fault because it's part of the San Andreas system.

Though the earthquake's epicenter is about 85 miles from Los Angeles, residents of various areas responded on Twitter that they felt the temblor.
