3 shootings in Compton, South LA leave 2 dead
Three separate shootings in Compton and South Los Angeles this weekend have left two men dead and another three wounded. The shootings occurred within hours of each other.
The first one was a drive-by, which happened Saturday night after 9 p.m., when three men standing on the corner of East 79th Street and South Central Avenue, were shot by a trio of men possibly driving a beige Chevy Suburban, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The victims were a 27-year-old man who was hit in the chest, a 40-year-old man who was hit in the upper torso and a 33-year-old who was shot in the forearm. It was unknown whether the shooting was gang-related.
The fatal shootings occurred hours later, when four men approached a 25-year-old man at 10:15 p.m. Saturday and shot him dead, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told the Los Angeles Times. Two hours later, a 26-year-old man was shot in a drive-by shooting near East 71st Street and South Central Avenue early Sunday morning, at 12:35 a.m.
From the Los Angeles Times:
Los Angeles recorded 39 homicides in August -- the most since 2007 -- and police last week reported a 7% increase in homicides citywide since the start of the year, compared with the same period in 2014.
Police assigned more officers to South L.A. to reduce the chances of retaliatory attacks over the holiday weekend. Last year five people were killed in South Los Angeles over the Labor Day weekend.
