$250,000 bail set for man arrested in Reseda standoff
RESEDA - Bail was set today at $250,000 for a man who allegedly shot a woman during a domestic dispute at a Reseda condominium complex and opened fire on police during a nearly 10-hour standoff.
Jason Paul, 39, of Reseda, was taken into custody just before 2 p.m. Sunday at the condominium complex at 18550 Hatteras St., near Reseda Boulevard, said Officer Karen Rayner of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section.
The gunman shot the 40-something woman during a domestic dispute about 4 a.m. Sunday, said Officer Dan Brown of the LAPD's West Valley Station. The victim, who is believed to be the gunman's wife or girlfriend, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was hospitalized in critical but stable condition, according to police.
After the suspect attacked the woman, he barricaded himself inside one of the units and opened fire on responding police officers, prompting the evacuation of residents at the 115-unit condominium complex.
The officers did not fire back and no one was hurt, police said.
A SWAT team negotiator assisted by the gunman's relatives eventually persuaded the suspect to surrender, according to police.
``The (suspect's) family contributed immensely,'' LAPD Deputy Chief Kirk Albanese told the Daily News. ``Despite the tremendous expertise of our people, it is amazing what will turn the key sometimes, so we are very appreciative.''
Paul was booked for suspicion of attempted murder and is being held at the Van Nuys jail, Rayner said.
