Rescuers pulled one person from heavy surf near Sunken City in San Pedro on Monday afternoon, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
Rescuers responded shortly before 4 p.m. by land, sea and air to a call of a person possibly drowning in the surf. They found one person without surf board or life vest who appeared to be struggling, according to LAFD spokesman Erik Scott.
The rescued man was taken to a local fire station for evaluation, but he declined transport to the hospital, according to LAFD.
A high surf advisory is in effect through 5 p.m. Tuesday, with waves reaching up to 12 feet, according to the National Weather Service.
“Due to the high surf, we certainly encourage people to stay back from the water’s edge, particularly children and pets. Don’t turn your back to it, and educate yourself and your children about rip current safety,” Scott told KPCC.
LAFD searched the area along with Port Police, life guards and the Coast Guard but found no other victims.
