Section of Berlin Wall Installed at Ronald Reagan Park

If you value independent local news, become a sustainer today. Your gift could help unlock a $1M challenge.

As part of a number of celebrations going on this week in honor of what would have been Ronald Reagan's 100th birthday, a section of the Berlin Wall has been installed in the park named for the President in San Bernardino.

Regan famously declared to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this wall," and now the section that reads "Attention! You are now leaving West Berlin" (ACHTUNG! SIE VERLASSEN JETZT West Berlin) is poised to teach generations to come about the historic moment and movement, according to the San Bernardino Sun.

5th Ward Councilman Chas Kelley said the wall segment is "going to be the No. 1 educational tool for the Inland Empire." The wall piece was bought at auction by the nonprofit group Friends of Ronald Reagan Park. There is also a new mural of Reagan, with his famous quote about the wall beneath.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive from readers like you will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
