A coffee cake rests in a shiny metal pan on a table. Three coffee cups are behind the pan.
A perfect coffee cake, some might say.

It’s Food Friday! And today, we’re talking about … LAUSD coffee cake, pretzels and vintage diners!

Wait, what is Food Friday? Every Friday, we'll give you ideas on what to eat, where to go and what to cook — plus the people and stories behind the dishes.

As a former LAUSD student, one of my absolute favorites and something that I randomly think about is the district’s coffee cake. What is that phrase Gen-Z likes to say? IYKYK (If you know, you know). And if you are like me and want to replicate the recipe, or if you’re in a mood for some coffee cake, I have the recipe right here! And yes, my colleague did try the recipe and yes, we did have a taste test with an LAUSD student and got their honest thoughts.

It’s Friday the 13th. And what better way to start the weekend than some silly, scary events? Here are some of our picks:

  • Son of Monsterpalooza, Burbank: If you’re into SFX for film, TV, and themed entertainment, then this expo is for you. Over 150 vendors, panels and presentations, makeup demos and celebrity guests (Sam Raimi, Cassandra Peterson [Elvira Mistress of the Dark], Linda Blair, Mekhi Phifer and others) throughout the weekend.
  • 'Haunted Tropics' at Lily's Bar, Hollywood Hills: Lost Cove Tiki pops up at Lily’s Bar offering its signature tiki cocktails, along with spooky-themed concoctions for the Halloween season.
  • Comical Magic, East Hollywood: The duo Pure & Weary (Katherine Biskupic & Leah Frires) pay tribute to the 1998 movie Practical Magic by hosting an evening of comical magic.

See the full list here.

ALSO: Despite me being a spooky Halloween emo girly, I am also a basic autumn girly too. And the How To LA team went out and channeled their inner yoga pants-wearing, UGG boots-sporting basic girl realness by visiting some spooky szn bars and trying the annual favorite: pumpkin-spiced latte.
