Red Cross opens new shelter in Duarte for fire evacuees in Pasadena
Topline:
The Red Cross and L.A. County officials are moving Eaton Fire evacuees from the Pasadena Civic Center to a new location at the Pamela Park gymnasium in Duarte, officials said Friday.
Why the move: The Pasadena Civic Center has served as a wildfire evacuation shelter for hundreds of people since the Eaton Fire erupted Jan. 7, but the Red Cross agreed to return the facility to the city of Pasadena for normal operations after the first week of February. For more than a week, the remaining shelter residents have been wondering where they'll go next.
Who’s still there? There are 127 people currently sheltering at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium Complex, according to the American Red Cross. Many of the remaining evacuees are residents displaced from Altadena. Red Cross and L.A. County officials are now helping the evacuees move to the Duarte facility, according to the L.A. County Department of Public Social Services.
Officials say: L.A. County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger, who represents Pasadena and Altadena, vowed to continue to support her displaced constituents. “I will continue to closely track the well-being of those impacted, ensuring they have access to critical resources and a pathway to stability as they transition to the new shelter location,” she said.
