Hole - "Malibu"

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Fires in Malibu are nothing new. But tonight while procrastinating we thought we'd revisit the old Hole tune - Courtney's last really great hit(?) - and we were sorta stunned by all the fire references in the lyrics and in the video. It's something we don't remember being so prevalent even though it was on the album cover, etc. But still, it's sorta eerie seeing it today.

"Malibu" was the second single off Hole's last album, Celebrity Skin, the first being the title track. Allegedly written about Kurt's stay at a rehab facility, Courtney co-wrote the tune with guitarist Eric Erlandson, and ex-lover Billy Corgan who played a huge part on the album via co-writing other tracks and just generally adding the man's touch to the sound - sorry Eric.

Here it is, for your pleasure, and below are the lyrics. This is your Midnight Movie.

Crash and burn
All the stars explode tonight
How'd you get so desperate?
How'd you stay alive?
Help me please
Burn the sorrow from your eyes
Oh come on, be alive again
Don't lay down and die

Hey hey, you know what to do
Oh baby, drive away to Malibu

Get well soon
Please don't go any higher
How are you so burned when you're barely on fire?
Cry to the angels
I'm gonna rescue you
I'm gonna set you free tonight, baby
Pour over me

Hey hey, we're all watching you
Oh baby, fly away to Malibu
Cry to the angels
That swallow you
Go and part the sea, yeah, in Malibu

And the sun goes down
I watch you slip away
And the sun goes down
I walk into the waves
And the sun goes down
I watch you slip away
And I walk
And I knew love would tear you apart
Oh, and I knew the darkest secret of your heart

Hey hey, I'm gonna follow you
Oh baby, fly away, yeah, to Malibu
Oceans of angels
Oceans of stars
Down by the sea is where you drown your scars

I can't be near you
The light just radiates
I can't be near you
The light just radiates

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
