More LA spots to try
  • The Moth, known for their storytelling events, is in L.A. tomorrow evening, August 3, for a night of "Good Food," where the words will be about what we eat and why we eat it, just like the focus of the weekly eat-centric KCRW radio show itself.
  • Echo Park's eagerly anticipated Mohawk Bend will finally open their doors to the public tonight! Last week we shared our enthusiasm about the restaurant's 70 craft beers, as well as numerous wines, and their menu that's 60-percent vegan, 20-percent lacto/ovo vegetarian and 20-percent meat, and comprised of dishes using "craft everything" ingredients.
  • As of July 1, patrons of the Original Pantry restaurant in Downtown Los Angeles have been asked to pay for a cup of coffee with their breakfasts for the firs time in the cafe's 87-year history. Now the cuppa joe runs 50 cents, says the L.A. Times, a price change "ordered by the Original Pantry's current owner, former L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan, to offset increased food costs."
  • The other day, while shopping at the Farmers' Market, I saw a sweet corn vendor chopping up ears of raw corn into sample-sized bites and encouraging passers to taste them. I hadn't actually tried raw corn, so I took one and was pleasantly surprised to find it's tender, delicious and refreshing right off the table. I'll admit, I haven't eaten much corn in my life, mostly due to thinking it required a lot of cooking. A recent radio show (probably "Good Food" but I didn't catch which one) featured a story on corn, and the suggestion that the best way to have it was just heated through on the grill, with your favorite seasoning. And now that I tasted it raw, I knew it was true.
  • Hot dog! We can thank the Germans for our favorite ballpark treat, but we can also head out to dine in several German sausage-focused establishments opening up around town. Who knew L.A. was so sausage-centric? Joining the fray of kutches, hauses, and currywursts is Wirtshaus, which will have its grand opening this Friday, July 29th.
  • Mobile food is nothing new in the United States--so many food items like the all-American hot dog first crossed our palates thanks to the entrepreneurship of immigrants and their pushcarts on our city streets. However, what is new is a movement by mobile food vendors across the nation who are coming together to push the federal government to declare a National Mobile Food Vendor Day.
