The weekend is so close you can practically taste it. Here are the edible events going on in the next few days to keep you occupied -- and sated, for that matter.

Free Burgers at The Melt: The new grilled cheese shop is set to open its third store in Los Angeles this weekend in Burbank, and the crew is celebrating by giving away free melts and soups for all fans who find the secret password on The Melt's Facebook page. You might find yourself wanting to go on a juice cleanse after noshing on their outrageous cheesy creations, but it'll be worth it. The freebies at the grand opening will be available from noon-6 p.m.

Modernist Ice Cream Social at L.A. Makerspace: With the hot weekend ahead, we're looking forward to some ice cream. Why not take your sweets making to the next level by learning some novel techniques in the field of molecular gastronomy? The folks at L.A. Makerspace will be doing just that, offering up delicacies as liquid nitrogen ice cream and miso jelly. As you go from station to station you'll learn about the science behind you food; and of course like any good scientist you'll be able to test the results. Here's what you'll be learning about, and eating, according to the organizers:

Caviars - Balsamic vinegar, key lime, miso soup
Liquid nitrogen deserts - Milk / Coconut milk based cryogen ice cream
Taste tripping - Try a fruit extract that makes sour things taste sweet
Carbonated fruit - No really, you can make bubbly fruit

You can buy tickets to the event, which takes place on Saturday from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. here.
