Starry Kitchen Is Closing, But Not Quitting!

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Starry Kitchen, California Plaza's most vibrant lunch (and sometimes dinner) destination is about to close down, but DO NOT PANIC...they aren't quitting.

In what has to have been the most fun press release to land in our inbox of late, SK co-owner and occasional banana suit-wearer Nguyen Tran assures lovers of their fun pan-Asian fare that SK is already prepping their next (ad)ventures.

First, they've got an offer in for another spot in Cal Plaza. Second, they are launching "an Asian family style joint-venture Din-Dins (don't call it a pop-up, 'cause we want this to be permanent) between Team SK + Fred Eric at the Tiara Cafe that's going to have the possibly "confusing" for some (but hopefully straightforward for others) name of: Starry (Kitchen) Nights @ Tiara Cafe," which should get underway August 9th. And, yes: They cater.

So why are they shuttering the official location they opened after running an underground eatery out of their old NoHo apartment? Tran says: "running a restaurant is FUCKING HARD Y'ALL!" He adds that there have been some hard, costly lessons, but they are getting the chance to do new projects with more experience behind them, and what Tran says is a chance to "wipe the slate clean."

How long to you have left to chow down at SK in DTLA? They're closing the location July 31, so not very long.

And here's a couple more FAQ's from Tran and the team (including his wife, Thi, who's known as the Kitchen Ninja):

WHEN YOU SETUP BACK IN CAL PLAZA WILL YOU BE YOUR SAME OBNOXIOUS (OR AS YOU SAY "PASSIONATE") SELF? "Whatchu think meng?!?!" haha (aka YUUUUUUUP!)

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO COME BACK TO CAL PLAZA?

I dunno, in a perfect world 4 months from now. *crossing my fingers*

Aww, man... We're so excited for them, but we miss them already!

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
