Friends & Family Brings Breakfast Galettes And Grain Bowls To East Hollywood
A new all-day restaurant is opening Tuesday in East Hollywood. Friends & Family, the latest by chef Daniel Mattern and baker Roxana Jullapat (alums, most recently, of the now-shuttered Cooks County, as well as Campanile and Ammo before), will be bringing vegetable-centric, "California-inspired" cuisine to their restaurant and market along Hollywood Boulevard.
“We’ve done tons of research inside and outside the kitchen for ‘Friends & Family,’" Mattern said in a press release. “And after a year of working on putting this project together, we’re anxious to carry out all the ideas we’ve written on the draft board.”
The 4,000-square-foot space will only be serving breakfast and lunch for now, but expect dinner service to begin by summer.
The breakfast menu will include items like buckwheat pancakes, Sonoran wheat croissants, breakfast galettes (kind of like a pie), and more. The pastry counter will include a further selection of heritage grain breakfast items and desserts, and coffee will be brewed from Counter Culture beans.
“In restaurants, the focus is on plated desserts and brunch pastries," Jullapat added. "But in this setting, my baking team and I can really go to town making breads, viennoiserie, specialty cakes, chocolate bars, and my favorite, ice cream. We were really lucky to find this awesome space that will allow us to do all this.”
For lunch, the kitchen will be rolling out hot and cold sandwiches, a vegetarian bowl, farmers market salads, and various meat and seafood dishes. The marketplace will offer up housemade preserves, chocolate bars, granola, and retail items like cookbooks.
Tuesday's opening will include an evening with Portland's Jami Curl, founder of Quin. She will be signing copies of her cookbook and handing out samples of her candies between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Friends & Family is located at 5150 Hollywood Boulevard in East Hollywood, (323) 668-2000. Current hours are Monday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Extended hours will ramp up by the end of May, with dinner service to arrive by summer.
