Chew On This: Free Drinks at The Edison, Umami Begets Pizza, Bizarre Foods Pop-Up, Burger Wars & More

What's going on lately in the L.A food scene? Chew on this:
How to Get a Free Drink @The Edison
Nevermind that elusive free lunch, The Edison in DTLA has a great way to get you a free drink this holiday season. Until Saturday the 17th, if you bring a new, unwrapped toy to the bar, you can check out a free Edison 77, a new cocktail created by mixologist Andrew Smith and named in honor of Thomas Edison's invention of the phonograph in 1877. In the drink: AppleJack, Proseco, Fresh Lemon and Honey Syrup. The toys are headed to the Midnight Mission for the annual toy drive, and The Edison is hoping to collect 3,000 toys this year.
Happy Hour @Mezze
Mezze is now offering half-priced craft beers and inventive cocktails every day from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m., as well as during a late-night happy hour on Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 p.m. - 1:00 a.m.. For nibbles, Eastern Mediterranean small plates are also now offered at the bar (at all hours). Some sample dishes by Chef Micha Wexler include Grandma’s Chopped Chicken Livers with Grape Mostarda and Mini-Challah, Eggplant Hushpuppies with Onion Fondue, and The Kleinfeld Sandwich: Chicken Shawarma with Amba and House Pickles on a Sesame Baguette.
New Cocktail Menu @Stella Rossa
Stella Rossa has introduced a new menu of handcrafted cocktails ($10-$13) to go with their pizzas. From the enticing list, standouts include the Cabin Fever (rye, maple syrup, sage and lemon), The Merchant’s Wife (gin, aperol, citrus and watermelon),and Royal Navy (rum, grapefruit, amaro and Serrano chili).
From the Umami Team: 800 Degrees Neapolitan Pizzeria in Westwood
Opening in January 2012, the Umami team and Allen Ravert have announced 800 Degrees Neapolitan Pizzeria in Westwood. Using traditional recipes and techniques from Naples to make their thin-crust pizza, 800 Degrees will "serve customized personal pizzas prepared to each guests liking, right before their eyes" in a wood-burning oven, we're told.

Malibu's Savory Restaurant is pitting burger against burger its new Monday Night Burger Wars. Owner and Executive Chef Paul Shoemaker has come up with different burger recipes in his kitchen, and the war will go down at your table. "The idea is that everyone orders their burger and then has a war at the table over whose is best," he explains. And not all burgers are made of beef; there's The Yardbird (grilled chicken breast with brie, bacon, caramelized onions and arugula) and The Tug Boat (catfish or cod done tempura style, with arugula, remoulade and heirloom tomatoes) among others, including the meaty Wolfmother (eight-ounce patty, balsamic onion compote, arugula, blue cheese, brie and aioli).
A Few Extra Nibbles:
- A new French restaurant, Papilles, is opening next week on Franklin in Hollywood.
- Squid Ink names the 10 Best Burgers in L.A.
- Wooo! Short Cake is opening up on Friday.
- OC's Fashion Island is getting a vegan restaurant.
